Stay Connected While Traveling: The Convenience of eSIMs

As much as we'd love to completely unplug on vacation, the reality is that most of us rely heavily on internet access when traveling — whether it's for navigation, booking rides, or staying in touch with family and friends (and travel advisor).

In the past, travelers typically had two options for staying connected abroad: either upgrade their existing cell phone plan to an expensive international plan or wait until they arrived in a foreign country to purchase a local SIM card. Both options came with their own set of challenges — high costs, limited availability, or the hassle of swapping out SIM cards.

Thankfully, there's now a smarter, more convenient solution — eSIMs (embedded SIM cards). If you have a newer smartphone with eSIM capability, you can easily purchase and activate a virtual SIM card before or shortly after you arrive at your destination. This allows you to access affordable mobile data in your new country without ever having to remove your regular SIM card.

Why choose an eSIM for travel?

✅ Instant connectivity: Activate your eSIM as soon as you land — no waiting in lines for a local SIM.

✅ Cost-effective: eSIM plans often cost significantly less than international roaming fees.

✅ Easy setup: Purchase and activate your eSIM online in minutes.

✅ Keep your primary number: Your original phone number still works for calls and texts, while your eSIM handles data.Switching to an eSIM for international travel is a game-changer, allowing you to stay connected without the hassle or high costs. Before your next trip, check if your phone supports eSIM and explore affordable data plans tailored for your destination

1) Evaluate your current plan with your cell/text/data provider. Are you paying more than $25.00 per month? Why? What exactly are you being charged for?

2) Check out Tello.com tello.com (They use the T-mobile network - which covers most of the U.S.) They have VERY affordable rates

When I 'retired' I was faced with paying for my own cell phone service for the first time. STICKER SHOCK.   I chose Tello and pay $8.00 per month for unlimited calls and texts.  I pay an additional $2.00 per month for 2GB of data every month and I can increase/decrease this every month if I want to.

3) Check out Airalo eSims for coverage when traveling internationally. They are super affordable - and have lots of options. I could go on and on about how much I love using these. You can purchase one before you leave the country, activate it as soon as your flight touches down internationally, and pull up maps, emails or anything else immediately. No roaming fees.
